Whether wedding insurance covers an Italian destination wedding depends heavily on your nationality. Here's what the cover actually protects, and the honest answer for US, UK, Canadian, and Australian couples.

Wedding blogs push insurance hard. Buy it the day you put down your first deposit, they say, before anything can go wrong. That advice comes from a market built around U.S. weddings held on U.S. soil. An Italian wedding sits outside that market in ways most of that advice never mentions. Whether wedding insurance helps you, and which kind, depends a lot on where you’re from. This guide covers what the cover does. Then it breaks down the real answer by nationality. A UK couple and a US couple end up looking at two very different sets of options.
Two Products Share One Name
“Wedding insurance” usually means one of two products, and providers rarely make the split clear. Cancellation insurance pays back money you’d otherwise lose if the wedding gets postponed or canceled. A caterer goes out of business. A venue floods. Someone in the wedding party gets seriously sick. Liability insurance is a separate thing. It covers injury to a guest, or damage to a venue. That’s the kind of thing you’d be legally on the hook for. Some couples need one. Some need both. A few venues, mostly in the US, won’t hand over the keys for the day without proof of liability cover. Neither product is the same as travel insurance. That covers your flights, your bags, and your own care abroad if you get sick. That gap matters more once you’re marrying outside your home country. It comes up again below.
What Cancellation Insurance Actually Covers
Cancellation policies tend to cover a short, fairly steady list. Bad weather. Sudden illness or injury to the couple or close family. A vendor closing down or failing to show up. Damage that makes the venue unusable. Many policies also cover lost or damaged attire, rings in transit, and gifts up to a set value. What they leave out matters just as much. A change of heart isn’t covered. Neither is a storm that had already been forecast when you bought the policy. Insurers call that a known event. Buying cover after one exists doesn’t count. Health conditions you already had before buying the policy are usually excluded too. A standard U.S. cancellation-and-liability package starts somewhere between $75 and $550. That range comes from several providers’ own published rates. Liability cover alone usually needs a minimum of about $100. None of that pricing assumes the wedding is happening outside the country where the policy was bought. That’s where things get more complicated.
The Detail Most Guides Skip
Here’s the part most guides skip. Several of the best-known U.S. wedding insurance brands don’t cover Italy at all. WedSafe’s own policy terms limit cancellation cover to the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico, the UK, Mexico, the Bahamas, Bermuda, and the Caribbean outside Cuba. Italy isn’t on that list. There’s no add-on tier that puts it there either. Markel’s wedding policy is even narrower. Its event cancellation reaches the UK and a short list of nearby spots. Its event liability cover stops at the US, Canada, and their territories. A search for wedding insurance often turns up mostly American brands. If the wedding is in Italy, most of what turns up simply won’t quote a policy. That’s worth knowing before assuming the product works the same way everywhere.
If You’re Booking From the UK
UK-based wedding insurers tend to do the opposite. Providers like Wedinsure and Lovebird openly cover weddings abroad, Italy included, often at the same price as a UK-only policy. Lovebird’s own policy wording puts it plainly. Destination weddings are covered worldwide. The only exceptions are countries the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office warns against visiting, and Italy isn’t one of them. Cover for cancellation, a vendor going under, and lost or damaged attire and rings usually carries over too. Two things usually don’t. Liability cover and marquee cover often stay limited to weddings held in the UK itself. Couples planning from London or Manchester should check that one line first. Don’t assume full cover follows you to Italy automatically.
If You’re Booking From the US
American couples marrying in Italy are in the trickiest spot of all. The dedicated event-insurance products most US wedding sites recommend are the WedSafe and Markel kind. They generally leave Italy out, as covered above. That doesn’t mean no protection exists. It means the standard product most American couples expect simply doesn’t apply here. Finding an alternative usually means calling a broker and asking directly whether they write international event policies. That’s slower than buying online in a few clicks. A domestic US wedding usually allows exactly that. It’s less convenient. It’s worth budgeting extra time for it.
If You’re Booking From Canada or Australia
Canadian and Australian couples run into two different problems. Canadian wedding insurers mostly write policies for weddings held inside Canada. Couples researching an overseas ceremony often hit a wall. Their own country’s insurer won’t quote one at all. Some end up buying a policy from wherever the wedding is happening instead. That’s the same workaround this guide points UK-bound couples toward above. Australian couples have more of a middle path. Dedicated wedding-insurance brands do exist there. But for a wedding held overseas, that’s often not what gets recommended. Guidance from Australian insurance comparison sites tends to point couples toward a travel policy with wedding add-ons instead. That’s often what’s on offer for an overseas date, and it’s usually enough. Either way, a quick call to a broker beats guessing. Don’t assume your usual home wedding-insurance product simply travels with you.
Wedding Insurance Isn’t Travel Insurance
Whichever version applies to you, wedding insurance and travel insurance solve different problems. Having one doesn’t cover you for the other. Wedding insurance protects the money already spent on the event: deposits, vendors, the venue itself. Travel insurance protects the trip: flight cancellations, lost bags, medical care if someone gets sick or hurt while traveling. Most couples marrying abroad end up needing both. They’re usually bought separately, often from providers with no connection to each other at all. Checking what each one leaves out is worth an hour of your time. Pay close attention to weather and any prior health conditions. Do this before either policy gets bought.
None of this has one simple answer. That’s exactly why it’s worth working through early. If you’d like help figuring out what applies to your nationality and your wedding date, get in touch. We’ll walk through it together.
